Crunchyroll looks to improve video discovery with Redux acquisition

Redux to bring discovery technology to Crunchyroll, will shut down apps

Popular anime and drama streaming service Crunchyroll has announced today that it has acquired video discovery startup Redux. The team behind Redux will be joining the Crunchyroll family, bringing with them experience in lean-back types of video discovery. As part of the acquisition, Redux will wind down their service and apps.

"Over the last few months we've gotten to know the Redux team and were impressed with their leadership in building pioneering video discovery and lean-back experiences," said Crunchyroll CEO Kun Gao.

Crunchyroll has been making attempts to put its service into the hands of as many people as possible in the last few years. Currently, the anime service can been streamed through apps on iOS and Android, Xbox Live, both the PlayStation 3 and the PlayStation 4 and streaming boxes like Roku and AppleTV. Crunchyroll announced earlier this month that the service would be available to users through Chromecast. The company also released an app for the PlayStation Vita in March.

Redux founder David McIntosh told VentureBeat that the company was originally considering a larger buyout from a different company. However, the team decided on Crunchyroll, since the technology Redux brings could have more of an impact to the streaming service. McIntosh won't be joining Crunchyroll, but will be focusing on another project called Riffsy instead.

"We are excited to be a part of Crunchyroll," says Redux's Chief Technical Officer Chris Pennello. "We're extremely impressed by what the Crunchyroll team has accomplished, and believe our team can make a strong impact at Crunchyroll, especially around the areas of video discovery and next-generation consumption experiences."

As Crunchyroll stands now, it only offers a small list of suggestions for other shows a viewer might be interested in at the bottom of a show's listing. Viewers are left to sort through a long list of anime or drama shows, either through alphabetical or seasons. Users can rate a series, but nothing is in place for a greater suggestion system, like Hulu or Netflix has.

The technology behind Redux will allow the over-the-top service to target shows better suited to customers. It could offer a more seamless experience for Crunchyroll's users, instead of trying to wade through the 25,000 episodes offered.

Next-generation entertainment company The Chernin Group became a major stake holder in Crunchyroll last December. The move brought more versatility to the company, allowing them to leverage more content for its subscribers. The service has over 200,000 premium subscribers globally.
