Rugged box features Core i7 processor, 4K display options in small format

A new small-format computer has been released by Stealth Computer, a company that specializes in industrial, rugged machines. Introducing a high-powered mini-PC into its existing line up of small PCs called the LPC-681, Stealth looks to add versatility to enterprise computing. The small PC features a fourth-generation mobile Intel Core i7 inside of a steel chassis that can be held in one hand. Stealth says that it is the first mini-PC from the company to offer 4K capabilities.

The LPC-681 comes in at 6.54 x 6.18 x 1.89 inches, and includes a 19 volt DC power adapter. It can also be connected up to an external power source for in-vehicle applications. Specifications for the unit include an Intel Haswell Core i7-4800 MQ 2.4 GHz processor, in a motherboard featuring Intel's Q87 chipset. The base model will come with a 120GB MLC solid state drive (SSD) and 4GB of RAM.

There are a number of display options in the machine, including one DisplayPort and two HDMI ports. Stealth says that the LPC-681 will support an "Ultra HD, 4K resolution with triple-display support." Video is limited to the on-board Intel HD graphics 4600. Build out options do not include any sort of discrete graphics.

Other included ports include an RS232 COM port, Gigabit Ethernet, 3.5mm line out and microphone ports, two USB 3.0 ports, two e-SATA ports and an additional two USB 2.0 ports on the front of the PC. Sound is handled by the Realtek HD ALC269Q. Two DisplayPort converters, one for VGA and the other for HDMI, are included with the machine.

For consumers looking at expansion options for the 3.3-pound machine, Stealth offers a number of modest options. Storage can be bumped up to a 1TB SSD, while memory can go as high as 16GB in two slots. Wireless can be added for another $65, bringing internal 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi. For operating systems, Windows 7, Windows 8.1, Windows 2008 R2 server or Ubuntu can come pre-installed.

Pricing for the LPC-681 starts out at a hefty $2,935. Stealth includes a one-year warranty.
