Amazon reportedly firing up streaming music service this week

updated 04:38 pm EDT, Wed June 11, 2014

Prime subscriber-only service may have limited catalog, older tunes

Confirming previous rumors, The New York Times purports that Amazon's streaming music service will launch this week, ahead of Amazon's alleged phone launch event next week. The service is said to be for Amazon Prime subscribers, and provide tracks six months after a new release, using a Spotify-like delivery method.

Despite the Amazon Prime requirement, the service is said to work across multiple devices. To fuel the service, Amazon allegedly proposed a $30 million fund for music licensing. A split of $25 million to major labels is expected, with the remainder being allocated to independent providers.

It is unclear with whom Amazon has secured licenses for a streaming service. Rumors indicate deals have been struck with Sony Music, and Warner Music. Other labels' involvement with the service are unclear.
