Lego Movie, 300 sequel pre-orders affected by contract negotiations

Amazon has halted pre-orders of some movies heading to DVD and Blu-ray in the coming months, as part of a dispute with Warner Home Video. In a move echoing that of its spat with the Hachette Book Group, the retailer is no longer accepting pre-orders for The Lego Movie, 300: Rise of an Empire, Transcendence, and other titles, in an attempt to gain leverage against the company.

Pre-orders for the movies were halted in mid-May, with the New York Times reporting customers have complained on forums about the change in policy. The product pages now offer to send a notification when the movie becomes available, with big-name franchises also being ranked low in Amazon's list of forthcoming movies.

While there has yet to be an official explanation, sources of Digital Bits claim the pre-orders for Warner movies were suspended as the two companies are "in the middle of negotiations on a new contract," with titles expected to become available to order again once a deal has been reached. Neither company issued a comment to the New York Times about the matter.

Amazon admitted to affecting sales in its negotiations with Hachette, claiming its actions do not affect 989 out of 1,000 items sold. At the time, Amazon suggested those requiring Hachette books quickly to "purchase a new or used version from one of our third-party sellers or from one of our competitors." While it has yet to state anything similar with Warner, pre-orders for upcoming Blu-ray and DVD releases that have been stalled by Amazon are still able to be placed through other online retailers.
