Evernote, Feedly servers affected, hit with denial of service attacks

updated 07:24 am EDT, Wed June 11, 2014

Evernote recovers from multi-hour DDoS attack, Feedly continues to suffer

Two prominent web properties have come under fire from distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks in the last 24 hours. Note-taking app Evernote struggled to stay active during its multi-hour attack earlier today, with Google Reader replacement Feedly being the current target, with the entire service currently unavailable while it attempts to mitigate the malicious traffic surge.

Evernote advised on Twitter that it was under attack, reports The Next Web, stating users "may experience problems" at the time. A later update confirmed it was a DDoS attack. Four hours later, another service update was issued by the company, claiming Evernote is "up and running," though there "may be a hiccup or two for the next 24 hours."

At around the same time, a similar attack was made against Feedly, with the company confirming it to be the work of criminals. "The attacker is trying to extort us money to make it stop," writes founder and CEO Edwin Khodabakchian. "We refused to give in and are working with our network providers to mitigate the attack as best we can," advised the service in a blog post, which also claims the attack is not affecting stored customer data.

While it is unclear if both attacks are from the same source, Feedly writes that it is "working in parallel with other victims of the same group and with law enforcement." The similarity and close timings of the attacks also strongly suggests it to be the same single culprit or group at work.

This is not the only time Evernote has come under attack. In early 2013, the service was forced to reset passwords for all of its users, following an intrusion that pulled hashed and salted passwords from its servers.
