SteelSeries unveils Sentry eye tracker for professional gamer training

updated 08:43 am EDT, Tue June 10, 2014

Fixations per minute tracked by SteelSeries training peripheral

Game peripherals manufacturer SteelSeries has launched an eye-tracking accessory at E3, designed to help professional game players in their training. Developed with Tobii Technology, the SteelSeries Sentry is able to monitor the position of the player's eyes in competitive play and track where they are looking at on a display, and attempts to provide useful feedback.

In a similar way to how professional players of games such as Starcraft II receive an Actions Per Minute (APM) rating based on key presses, the Sentry uses its own Fixations Per Minute (FPM) statistic, gauging the number of times the user moves their gaze around the screen. In both statistics, a higher value is better, with a lower FPM suggesting the player may want to switch their focus around the screen more often. SteelSeries is working with current professional gamers to work out a benchmark FPM score to reach.

While the device is primarily meant for training purposes, SteelSeries and Tobii are also working on making the Sentry able to control games and apps with eye movements in the future.

SteelSeries aims to ship the Sentry Eye Tracker later this year, for an undetermined price.
