Skype iPhone app gets redesign with new look, messaging features

updated 01:25 pm EDT, Mon June 9, 2014

Update happening next week

Microsoft's Skype division has announced an impending redesign of its iPhone/iPod touch app, v5.0. The title should have a cleaner interface that's easier to navigate, in part through the introduction of Windows Phone-style swipe gestures that flip between tabs. Buttons at the bottom of the interface jump into the dialer or a list of open chats.

New in-app banner notifications display incoming chat messages without a person having to leave their current window; meanwhile, messages can be sent to offline contacts, and read notifications should sync uniformly across devices. An added Favorites tab displays large icons for frequent contacts.

Microsoft says that the update should reach the App Store sometime next week. No timing for an iPad upgrade has been announced, but the project is in development.
