Russia arrests men accused of hijacking Australian Apple devices

Suspects caught withdrawing victims' money from ATM

Russian government officials say they have arrested two people accused of hijacking Apple devices in Australia and demanding ransom money. The scheme was reportedly lead by a 23-year-old man identified only as Ivan; an unnamed 17-year-old is said to have been his accomplice. Russia's Ministry of Internal Affairs states that both are from Moscow, and were arrested during "operational activities" conducted by the Interior Ministry. One of them has already been tried in the past.

The pair are said to have been spotted in CCTV footage withdrawing ransom money from an ATM. One local media report describes Ivan as "madly keen on computers and hacking," and suggests that he "never studied or worked and was always looking for easy ways to make money."

The panic around the event prompted Apple to issue a rare comment insisting that iCloud hadn't been compromised. A possibility is that the culprits reused information from websites that had been breached, hoping that enough people weren't using different usernames and passwords for their Apple IDs.
