Irista offers 10GB free cloud storage, extensive image organization

Canon is introducing a new service designed to support owners of its cameras, while at the same time taking on Dropbox, Flickr, and Google Drive, by offering its own brand of online storage. Iristra is photography-focused cloud storage that works just for images, with the service said to provide extensive cataloging, collecting, and tagging options.

Photographs are uploaded through the browser or the desktop app, with CNET reporting there to be automatic synchronization of new shots with existing image collections, as well as no file-size limitations and the ability to use both JPEG and RAW files. Photographs can be tagged and searched for by time, location, the type of lens used, with comments from images shared with Facebook and Flickr also stored by the service.

While it does not offer any editing functions at present, a Canon spokesperson suggested it could do so in the future. "As Irista is cloud-based, there is the opportunity to continually evolve the platform, and we're particularly keen to continue to engage with the community to see what features they would like to have added."

Irista provides a free allocation of 10GB as well as full access to all features and functions. Extra storage can be bought, with 50GB priced at £4.49 ($7) per month or £45 ($75) per year, or 100GB at a monthly cost of £9.99 (15) or £99 ($170) annually.

They'll need to offer a hell of a lot more than 100GB if they want to attract anything more than casual photographers.
