Twitter added to Xbox One, Microsoft reveals further 45 apps incoming

The latest update for the Xbox One, being made available to download globally this week, has introduced support for external hard drives among other features. The game console update comes at the same time as a second Microsoft announcement, revealing more than 45 new apps will be rolling out onto the Xbox One and the Xbox 360 before the end of this year.

The software update will allow up to two external hard drives to be connected to the Xbox One, with maximum capacities of 256GB per USB 3.0 drive. The friends and followers feature is also being updated to allow for "real names" to be displayed instead of a nickname, with options to limit who can view the real name in the user's profile. SmartGlass will provide complete access to OneGuide and the Universal Remote Control, for controlling a connected DVR, with the expanded controls being made available in Canada, the UK, France, Germany, Spain, and Italy for the first time.

Twitter integration has been included in the update, with users able to see tweets related to cable or satellite TV shows being watched, as well as in aspects of the OneGuide TV listings showing programs trending in real-time on the microblogging service.

The Xbox Live Gold membership now offers Games with Gold on the Xbox One, as well as Deals with Gold, features previously only available on the Xbox 360. Gold members in the US will also receive a free three-month trial of Hulu Plus.

The list of new apps heading to the Xbox One and Xbox 360 varies from country to country, with some apps being new to just one platform rather than both. The list of apps heading to the US on the Xbox One includes Comedy Central, Crunchyroll, GoPro, HBO GO, MTV, STARZ Play, and Vine, along with dedicated apps for the NHL, NBA, and MLG, though exact launch dates were not disclosed.
