iOS 8 version of Find My iPhone adds 'Send Last Location' option

updated 02:06 pm EDT, Wed June 4, 2014

May improve odds with lost and stolen devices

The iOS 8 incarnation of Find My iPhone includes a new "Send Last Location" option, notes AppleInsider. A description explains that toggling it on will send the last location of a device to Apple once the battery drains "to a critical level." It's not known how this information will be shared with device owners, or how long it will persist.

Find My iPhone currently holds a device's last-recorded location for 24 hours. By allowing iOS to force an update immediately before a device powers off, Apple is presumably hoping to maximize that time. It may help in retrieving a lost or stolen product, although in the latter case it may be possible to restore iOS and break Activation Lock before Apple can get an accurate location.

Perhaps Apple will use iOS 8 to let us set default location, one that doesn't look to GPS or WiFi stations. When I'm at home, I'd rather just tell my iPad or iPhone that and not wait for a location fix that, given the nature of some locations, may never come. That'd be particularly useful with iPads that lack GPS. When I moved cross-country, my iPad kept seeing my WiFi and thinking I was 2600 miles away in Seattle. Only when WiFi signals were remapped, did my iPad get my location right. That might never happen if I'd moved to a rural location far from the nearest road. And while Apple is doing all this chatting between devices in iOS 8, why not let our iPhone tell our iPad and MacBookAir our GPS location?
