Turkey's ban on YouTube reversed after being in effect for 67 days

updated 07:05 pm EDT, Tue June 3, 2014

YouTube service restored under circumstances similar to Twitter reinstatement

According to information from the Hurriyet Daily News, YouTube is now open again to citizens of Turkey after enduring a two-month ban of the service. The Telecommunications Directorate (TIB) announced today that it had removed the popular video site from its list of "blocked sites" after receiving word from the country's highest court. The restoration of the service comes about after the Constitutional Court in the country issued a ruling that the ban on YouTube had violated free speech rights.

The ruling by the court was issued four days earlier, but was acted upon by the TIB today. The ban on the video sharing site had been in effect since late March. Videos of a secret meeting in Syria, deemed criminal by the members of the Turkish government, led to the countrywide block of YouTube. The decision to release the ban was brought on in part by three different appeals, including one from Google itself.

After the ban was lifted, YouTube issued a comment on the return of the service in Turkey to Mashable.

"We are glad that YouTube has been restored in Turkey following our successful appeal to the courts, and that people and businesses can once again access and share information on YouTube," said the YouTube spokesperson.

YouTube isn't the first service to have its ban overturned in the country. Previously, Turkey had banned Twitter over illegal links related to government corruption, but would see a ruling to lift the ban issued in March. The Constitutional Court had handed down judgment that the ban was to be lifted under similar circumstances as the YouTube ruling.
