Peer-to-peer AirPlay coming to iOS 8 and Apple TV

updated 11:44 am EDT, Tue June 3, 2014

Should expand Apple TV's practicality

A small but significant change being brought to iOS 8 is peer-to-peer AirPlay connections between iOS devices and Apple TVs, Apple's official website reveals. At the moment, iOS devices wanting to broadcast to an Apple TV have to be on the same Wi-Fi network. That presents a problem, though, if a person doesn't have access to login credentials or a LAN is offline or simply non-existent.

Apple has yet to explain how the technology will work, but it's likely that devices will discover each other through Bluetooth and form direct Wi-Fi links, much like AirDrop. The same concept could conceivably be applied to Macs using OS X Yosemite, but Apple has yet to mention any plans in that regard.

The feature will also presumably require an update to the Apple TV firmware. The set-top has been rumored as getting both a firmware and a hardware refresh sometime this year, but neither was on display at yesterday's WWDC keynote.
