Web giants launch 'Reset the Net' anti-surveillance campaign

updated 09:47 am EDT, Tue June 3, 2014

BoingBoing, Imgur, Reddit team with Fight for the Future for effort

Web luminaries, tired of constant US National Security Agency (NSA) monitoring, are starting a counter-surveillance initiative. The "Reset the Net" campaign, spearheaded by BoingBoing, Imgur, and Reddit will launch on Thursday, recommending users adopt encryption for day-to-day computing, and committing to improving user privacy by implementing HTTPS, preventing all but the most dedicated surveillance by external sources.

Internet advocacy group Fight for the Future founder Tiffiniy Cheng believes that "now that we know how mass surveillance works, we know how to stop it. That's why people all over the world are going to work together to use encryption everywhere and make it too hard for any government to conduct mass surveillance."

The initiative harkens back to the protests against the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) of 2012. Some sites will display a splash screen to users upon visitation. Others will provide direct download links of encryption tools and other guidance for users to avoid governmental eavesdropping on Internet communications.

Reddit's General Manager Erik Martin said of the campaign that "we can take back control of our personal and private data one website, one device, one internet user at a time. We're proud to stand up for our users' rights and help Reset the Net."
