Mavericks installed on 51 percent of Mac desktops, 40M copies installed
The number of developers registered with Apple has increased 47 percent since last year to 9 million, according to one of a number of statistics brought up in the Worldwide Developers Conference keynote address. The conference itself has grown in the 25 years it has run for, with over 1,000 Apple engineers in attendance, and the youngest developer in the audience is 13 years old.
The sale of Macs beat the industry trend by a significant margin, with the PC industry as a whole declining 5 percent year-on-year, and Macs increasing by 12 percent, bringing the total Mac install base to 80 million. Over 40 million copies of Mavericks have been installed, with Tim Cook claiming it to be the fastest adoption of any PC operating system. User adoption rates of Mavericks are at 51 percent, dwarfing Windows 8 and the 14 percent share of the entire Windows install base it currently has, despite Windows 8 shipping a year before Mavericks.
OS X is not the only aspect of Apple's empire that has enjoyed high sales. Sales of iOS devices have now surpassed 800 million, consisting of 500 million iPhones, 200 million iPads, and more than 100 million units of the iPod touch, with 98 percent of Fortune 500 companies also said to use iOS. Over 130 million iOS device buyers in the last 12 months alone were entirely new to Apple, with a large contingent being switchers from Android. It is claimed there are large numbers of smartphone owners in China switching from Android to iOS.
Customer satisfaction for iOS 7 lies at 97 percent, with 89 percent of the entire iOS install base running the latest version. By comparison, only 9 percent of Android users are using the latest iteration, KitKat, with more than a third running on versions of Android released four years ago. "They can't get security updates, which is particularly important for these users because Android dominates the mobile malware market," claimed Cook, accompanied by a chart showing a 99-percent share of malware for Android.
The App Store has grown to offer over 1.2 million apps to iOS users, with 300 million visitors every week, and over 75 billion apps downloaded since the store opened.
