Briefly: Swift programming e-book, Apple Design Awards 2014

Apple offers free guide to new Swift language through iBooks

On the same day it announced a new programming language for iOS and OS X apps called Swift -- but ahead of releasing the Xcode 6 IDE needed to actually code in it -- Apple has published a free e-book guide to Swift on the iBookstore. Similar in nature to the educationally-oriented Scala language, Swift overcomes Scala's Java-based slowness by using C, C++ and Objective-C as its base. The new language provides native speed and the support of existing frameworks, while offering a simplified approach to writing code.

The book provides a tour of the fundamentals of Swift, a reference guide, and explanations of each feature. It's available free of charge, and no Apple Developer membership is required to download and peruse the book. However, in order to put the new language to use, programmers will need a copy of Xcode 6 -- which requires an Apple Developer account.

Apple Design Awards announced

Following Monday's keynote address, Apple has handed out its 2014 Apple Design Awards for the best iOS and OS X apps from the preceding year. This year, 11 apps (nine for iOS, two for OS X) were honored with the award and prizes including most of Apple's hardware offerings. The company said that the winners "raise the bar in design, technology, and innovation."

The iOS winners included Device 6, Leo's Fortune, Monument Valley, PanoPerfect, Sky Guide, Storehouse, Teachley: Addimal Adventure, Threes and Yahoo News Digest. The OS X winners were diary program Day One and image/video hybrid maker Cinemagraph Pro.
