Nintendo unveils Wii U converter box for Gamecube controllers

updated 05:39 pm EDT, Sun June 1, 2014

USB box allows use of fan favorite Wavebird controllers in upcoming Smash Bros. game

On top of the news that Nintendo would be holding a Super Smash Bros. Invitational at E3 this year, the company has unveiled a new option for controllers on the Wii U. A new USB converter box has been introduced for the console, allowing gamers to play the upcoming Smash Bros. title with a Gamecube controller. Information about the box was dropped in an announcement video containing details on the tournament and later on Twitter.

Even though Super Smash Bros. was first developed for the Nintendo 64, the title didn't obtain large scale popularity until Super Smash Bros. Melee was released for the Gamecube in 2001. The title would go on to sell 7 million copies with the help of its simple controls and combination of characters. The Gamecube Wavebird controller would become the preferred method of control because of this release.

Use of the Wavebird controllers became more widespread as well as with the original Wii's inclusion of ports for the controller. This allowed the Wavebird to be used later on in Super Smash Bros. Brawl upon its release in 2008. Super Smash Bros. Brawl could handle several types of controller inputs at the same time, eventually helping the title sell more than 11 million copies.

Details on the price and compatibility with wireless Wavebird controllers and other Wii U games has yet to be addressed by Nintendo. The box will be seen at E3 along with a select number of characters in the upcoming Smash Bros. game set for a winter 2014 release.
