Microsoft, Salesforce forge partnership; boost interoperability

updated 11:14 am EDT, Fri May 30, 2014

Office products, Microsoft Azure, salesforce1 integration planned

Late yesterday, Microsoft and salesforce.com announced a strategic partnership to create new solutions that connect salesforce.com's customer relationship management apps and platform to Microsoft Office and Windows. The new partnership will allow users to collaborate on Office content from within Salesforce using Office Mobile, Office for iPad and Office 365, as well as form a coherent cloud offering, combining the best features of both companies for enterprise customers.

Besides just the Office document collaboration improvement, the companies plan to use OneDrive for Business and SharePoint Online as integrated storage options for Salesforce, use Salesforce and Outlook together with a new Salesforce App for Outlook, and connect Salesforce data to Microsoft services to better visualize information.

"Today is about putting the customer first," said Marc Benioff, chairman and CEO of salesforce.com. "Together with Microsoft, we are building bridges that allow customers to be more productive." Benioff claims that he would start running his company in the future with a Windows phone, and shift away from his iPhone.

Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft, said of the partnership that "working together we'll deliver new solutions that connect the customer insights of Salesforce to the cloud productivity of Office 365, cloud platform of Azure and the mobility of Windows." Nadella was asked in a conference call touting the benefits of the partnership about competing Microsoft product Dynamics, and he said that there would still be some areas where the two companies would compete.

A preview of most services between the pair is planned to be available in fall 2014 with general availability in 2015. Terms of the deal were not announced.
