Apple turning to local ads, radio stations to boost iTunes Radio

updated 01:49 pm EDT, Fri May 30, 2014

Could make iTunes more appealing to marketers

Apple is planning several changes to improve the success of iTunes Radio, according to ad buyers reached by The Information. The first is the addition locally-targeted ads, something reportedly happening later this year. The company may also begin promoting iTunes with "house ads" on its iAd network.

Lastly, Apple is said to be aiming at cooperation with broadcast radio stations to improve the amount of content on its service. That presumably refers to streaming more stations, on top of previously-reported additions like ESPN and NPR. While iTunes Radio is centered around streaming music hosted on iTunes itself, Apple has been attempting to lure more listeners via third-party sources.
