Core Infrastructure Initiative funds OpenSSH, OpenSSL developers

updated 11:40 am EDT, Thu May 29, 2014

Linux Foundation-backed initiative to pay for developers, fund code audits

The Linux Foundation's Core Infrastructure Initiative (CII), a project that enables identification and funding open source projects that are in need of assistance, today announced five new backers. Additionally, the first projects to receive funding from the Initiative have been announced to be the Network Time Protocol, OpenSSH, and OpenSSL.

Additional founding members of the CII now include Adobe, Bloomberg, HP, Huawei and salesforce.com. They join other members of CII who include Amazon Web Services, Cisco, Dell, Facebook, Fujitsu, Google, IBM, Intel, Microsoft, NetApp, Rackspace and VMware.

OpenSSL will receive funds from CII for two, full-time core developers. The Open Crypto Audit Project (OCAP) will also receive funding in order to conduct a security audit of the OpenSSL code base. An issue with OpenSSL was found to be at the core of the "Heartbleed" bug, which jeopardized security for a large number of SSL/TLS-based transmissions.

The Initiative's funds are administered by The Linux Foundation and an advisory board comprised of backers of the project, as well as key open-source developers and other industry luminaries. Support from the initiative will include funding for fellowships for key developers to work full-time on open-source projects, security audits, computing and test infrastructure, travel, face-to-face meeting coordination and other support.
