Valve Software pushes Steam Controller release to 2015

Launch date slips in favor of more hardware development

Steam users will potentially have to wait until next year before they will be able to purchase Valve Software's Steam Controller, the company has announced. In a community blog post, Valve advises it is "looking at a release window of 2015, not 2014" for the controller, and in turn could affect the shipment of Steam Machines from the company.

The original Steam Controller used two clickable circular trackpads instead of a dual joystick system used by other controllers, as well as a touchpad providing extra features, though this second element has been replaced in favor of more buttons. As the controller is an important part of the console gaming experience, it is logical for Valve to want to get this section right, and so is continuing to develop and test the device.

"We're now using wireless prototype controllers to conduct live playtests, with everyone from industry professionals to die-hard gamers to casual gamers," the post states. "It's generating a ton of useful feedback, and it means we'll be able to make the controller a lot better."

The post does refer to Steam Machines, effectively a PC running the Linux-based Steam OS, though it does not state if the hardware production by partners of Valve is similarly affected by the controller's extended development time.
