Tablet shipments shrink year-over-year for first time

updated 04:46 pm EDT, Wed May 28, 2014

iPad keeps top spot

Global tablet shipments fell year-over-year for the first time in the March quarter, according to tracking data from NPD DisplaySearch. Whereas 59 million units were recorded in Q1 2013, the market shrank to 56.3 million units last quarter. If paired with laptops, tablets nevertheless represented over half of mobile PC shipments.

The Apple iPad seized 20 percent of the mobile PC space -- shrinking slightly, but still beating Samsung, which slipped to 11 percent. Companies like Lenovo, HP, and ASUS saw modest gains, but couldn't touch either Samsung or Apple. Acer, Toshiba, and Google lost ground.

Both the tablet and overall mobile computer industries have been shifting in the past year. Although the iPad is still dominant, Android-based tablets have been making inroads. Windows 8 tablets have become more prevalent, but are still marginal next to Mac and Windows laptops.

Please explain who "others" is/are. If they are toys or junk please drop them and only compare compatible tablets that actually do something constructive. Others is such a large portion of shipments identifying them must be done.

Oh wait, the chart lists shipments not sales. None of the others group were probably sold.
