Sony broadcasts E3 press conference to North American movie theaters

updated 09:25 pm EDT, Wed May 28, 2014

Company expands conference experience viewing options to fans stuck at home

Sony is thinking a little outside of the box when it comes to giving people the access they need during their E3 2014 press conference. For those unable to make the trip to Los Angeles in June, the company has teamed up with movie theaters across North America to broadcast the event in high definition on over 40 screens.

The event will be simulcast to viewers, giving those that attend the theater screening of the event an additional 30 minutes of exclusive content. Information on the Playstation blogsays that there will be extended game footage, interviews with developers and giveaways for those that are able to reserve a seat. Those that wish to attend can reserve their seat through Eventgrid.

Reserving a seat is expected to be required, not only to ensure that the screening happens, but also because the event is free. A small sample of the cities participating include San Francisco, Portland, Denver, Boston and New York. While the majority of the screens are in the United States, a select number have been scheduled in Canadian cities, including Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal.

Those that aren't in one of cities or attending E3 will still be able to watch the press conference through the Playstation blog or on Ustream. It may be the third tier experience, behind being there in person and witnessing it on the silver screen, but Sony is providing plenty of options for those that wish to see the spectacle.

Sony's press event is scheduled to begin at 9:00 PM Eastern Time on June 9, but the screening event is set to started at 8:30 PM. Visit the Playstation blog to see a full list of cities and theaters taking part in the simulcast. The Playstation E3 Experience, as it is being called, will be hosted by Geoff Keighley. If the trailer is any indication, viewers can expect to see footage from games like The Order: 1886, Driveclub and Bungie's Destiny.
