Nintendo to share ad revenue with YouTube 'Let's Play' creators

Decision backtracks on company's previous stance over copyright videos

Console maker Nintendo has changed its mind on the lock down of revenue on "Let's Play" videos on YouTube. Nintendo will be launching an "affiliate program" that will give a share of the ad revenue from videos to the person(s) creating the content. The move comes after content had been flagged and removed from YouTube when Nintendo filed copyright claims on videos that included footage of their games in 2013.

The new program will require those producing the videos to obtain permission from Nintendo before posting them on the video sharing site. Ad revenue will be split, after YouTube receives its cut. Nintendo has been tagging videos with ads prior to the announcement, sidestepping creators in the process. In a statement to Gamasutra, Nintendo confirmed that it had been inserting the videos on Nintendo copyrighted material under "appropriate circumstances." Revenue for those ads were being shared between Nintendo and YouTube.

"In addition, for those who wish to use the material more proactively, we are preparing an affiliate program in which a portion of the advertising profit is given to the creator," said the Nintendo spokesperson.

While the solution is not as cut and dried as posting a video on YouTube normally, it shows a bit of consideration for people drawing attention to their games. It has taken the company close to a year to make the change, but giving users even a small ability to benefit from their videos is a large step forward. Nintendo says they will follow-up at a later date with details on the program, according to statements made on Twitter.
