WSJ: Samsung prepares standalone Gear Solo for June, July launch

updated 04:03 pm EDT, Fri May 23, 2014

Samsung Gear Solo smart watch could appear on carriers in US, Europe, South Korea

Samsung could be preparing to launch another smart watch between June and July, this time the rumored standalone version, according to the Wall Street Journal. The report claims Samsung is currently in talks to bring the device, which could be called the Gear Solo, to carriers in the United States, Europe, and its native South Korea, and will apparently retain most of the features of the Gear 2 watches released this year.

The Gear Solo is believed to have built-in cellular radios and space for a SIM card, which would allow it to perform typical smart watch functions without requiring a nearby smartphone to locally connect with. The Tizen device will be able to connect to the Internet on its own, and will be able to make and receive calls without tethering, though it is unclear if wearers will do so by bringing the watch close to their head.

Sources claim it will be able to take photographs, send e-mail, have a built-in GPS, offer Bluetooth connectivity, and will also include a heart monitor. Considering the power requirements of GPS, cellular connectivity, and that it would effectively replace a smartphone on its own, it is likely to require a much bigger battery than the 300mAh version offered by the Gear 2.

Samsung isn't going to miss any opportunities, that's for sure. They've got a device for everything imaginable. That company is covering all the bases so they can't possibly lose to Apple or any other company. I'm not sure if many people are going to want to make a phone call from a watch, but I suppose it could come in handy in an emergency even if it just had a solid half-hour talk time. Samsung is a pretty amazing company. Anything product can think about, they simply build it and sell it.
