LG G3 rumored to have laser-guided autofocus system for rear camera

Clenched fist gesture rumored to trigger selfie photographs in LG G3

LG will be using a laser-based focusing system in its upcoming LG G3, according to a rumor. The imaging detail comes at the same time as new teaser videos surface for the flagship smartphone in South Korea, ahead of its expected launch on May 27th, with the videos giving a few glimpses of a case seen before in multiple earlier leaks and rumors.

The Verge claims the G3 will use the laser in a similar way to the second camera on the HTC One M8, next to its 13-megapixel OIS+ camera, sensing the depth of a subject and in theory reducing the time between the user pressing the shutter button in the camera app, and when the image is taken. The camera will also use gesture recognition with its 2.1-megapixel front-facing camera, automatically taking a self portrait when the user clenches their fist in front of the device.

The first of three teaser videos on LG's Korean website gives a clear view of the G3's rear, showing it to either have a brushed metal casing or one mimicking the texture. The second, for the display, confirms it will have a resolution of 2560x1440, while the last one teases its camera.

A recent "secret" pre-launch event revealed the LG G3 will have a 5.5-inch display, a quad-core Snapdragon 801 processor, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, and a 3,000mAh battery. It will also ship at the same time as the QuickCircle case, a cover for the phone with a circular window, allowing users to read notifications and perform a variety of functions without removing the cover.
