Apple publicly admits iMessage problem, promises iOS update

updated 09:42 am EDT, Thu May 22, 2014

Says it recently fixed related server-side bug

Apple has issued a public statement admitting problems with the iMessage system and indicating that it's working on them. "We recently fixed a server-side iMessage bug which was causing an issue for some users, and we have an additional bug fix in a future software update," the company says. Until now, the only comments from Apple have come from AppleCare representatives.

Glitches are affecting iPhone owners who decide to switch to a non-Apple phone. iMessage appears to be permanently linking those phone numbers with defunct Apple IDs, causing texts from other iPhone owners to be registered as sent, despite their actually vanishing into the ether. There are workarounds, but the only surefire solution is to disable iMessage before switching phones.

Such troubles have been ongoing since iOS 5, but have regained attention thanks to the AppleCare remarks and a new lawsuit addressing the topic. The number of people switching from iPhones to other devices is also likely higher now; while the iPhone is the most popular individual smartphone in many countries, platform-wise the product has been eclipsed by Android.
