Community server project keeps Wi-Fi alive for Nintendo Wii, DS

updated 07:12 pm EDT, Thu May 22, 2014

Project adds public test server for multiplayer use after Gamespy shutdown

With Nintendo shutting down Wi-Fi functionality for the aging Wii and DS consoles, customers still hoping for multiplayer action in their older titles have been left to their own devices. However, a community project has created a workaround, launching a Wi-Fi connection server to help stave off the results of the Gamespy shutdown.

The fix, which initially started on Github as a sever emulator project for the DS, requires users to alter the configuration of their consoles with the help of custom ROMs or firmware. Users will have to change the DNS settings to point to the new servers, accessed through the third-party software. DS owners will have to load a storage card with a ROM featuring NoSSL, while Wii owners can accomplish the changeover with software on a SD card or USB drive.

Some games don't work under normal patcher routes, which requires owners to take a slightly longer route to access the new server. DS titles like Mario Kart DS will need to be manually patched. The project warns that any saved games on the systems need to be deleted, or it will produce an error when connecting.

Only a small number of titles on the consoles are confirmed to be working under the fix, with most of the games being for the DS, including Mario Kart DS and Phantasy Star Zero. The project is also offering downloadable content for a number of games on a public test server. The project is not operating under any official capacity of Nintendo.

Other games that have been affected by the Gamespy sever shutdown continue to find extended life through other outlets. Qtracker will be emulating Gamespy servers, bringing back multiplayer for games like Battlefield 1942, Halo and< em>Return to Castle Wolfenstein.
