Mojang eyes August for Minecraft release on next-gen consoles

updated 10:15 pm EDT, Thu May 22, 2014

Announcement includes data imports from older consoles, upgrade price

Minecraft is making its way to the Xbox One, Playstation 4 and Playstation Vita this August, according to a statement from Mojang today. The company detailed some of the differences from previous console generations, including a reduced cost for buyers of previous versions and ability to import saves to next-generation consoles. The company also announced that most downloadable content (DLC) and texture packs would be available in the new versions.

Apologizing for the release delay, the company quickly spelled out the features for the three new versions, mostly focusing on the particular console's strength. Both Xbox One and Playstation 4 versions would have bigger worlds and draw distances than versions on the previous generation. The perk to the Vita is its mobile versatility, while still retaining online play.

The biggest perk is that gamers who had played Minecraft on either Xbox 360 or Playstation 3 would be able to import their saves to the new devices when the purchased the new version. Consoles saves can't be transferred across different manufacturers, say from Xbox 360 to Playstation 4. However, the Vita version would be linked to the Playstation 3 through cross-save.

To sweeten the deal, Mojang is giving buyers of the older copies a limited-time upgrade fee, which will be available for a minimum of a year. It will drop the cost down to $5 from the full price of $20. Those who purchase a copy for Vita will get a copy for the Playstation 3 as well, through the cross-buy program. Customers who have already purchased the Playstation 3 will get the Vita software for free.
