Streaming service adds worldwide subscribers at rapid clip

Streaming on-demand music service Spotify has announced that it has hit a milestone in mainstream adoption, with 10 million paying subscribers among its 40 million worldwide listeners. The figure is up 66 percent from March, when it reported just six million paying customers. Among the top streaming services, Spotify has a much broader reach than any of the others, operating in 56 worldwide markets.

The surge in subscribers is unlikely to change the service's position in the US as the fourth most-popular streamer (behind iTunes Radio, iHeartRadio and Pandora), but the growth rate could eventually threaten the other services' standings in the lucrative US/North America market. Spotify's worldwide reach could prove a serious advantage long-term, though Apple's iTunes Radio is expected to add some top-tier countries for expansion beyond its current US and Australia availability.

Southwest adds mobile boarding pass support to iOS app

Southwest Airlines has updated its free iOS app to include support for displaying readable boarding passes on one's iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad. A total of 28 US airports are now supported, and the update also offers new "upcoming trip" information cards on the homepage of the app that notifies users of status or gate changes. The app also improves access to features such as displaying the mobile boarding pass and early check-in from the home screen, along with the usual bug fixes and performance improvements.

Southwest's new version, 2.4, still lacks support for Apple's Passbook unlike many other airlines, but will display a scannable boarding pass for security and gate check-in at the following airports: ABQ, ATL, AUS, BWI, BNA, BUR, DAL, DEN, FLL, HOU, LAS, LAX, MCI, MCO, MDW, MKE, MSY, OAK, PHL, PHX, RSW, SAN, SFO, SJC, SMF, SNA, STL, and TPA.
