Verizon plans VoLTE launch later this year, will include video calls

updated 04:33 am EDT, Wed May 21, 2014

National launch of Verizon VoLTE planned for rollout

Days after announcing its rebranded XLTE service, Verizon has revealed it will be bringing Voice over LTE (VoLTE) to its network later this year. Unlike AT&T's announcement for HD Voice last week, Verizon will skip the regional launches of its competitor, instead opting to make it available nationwide from launch, though the carrier has not indicated exactly when it will take place.

Verizon claims its VoLTE offering will be interoperable with other networks using the same standards, with Engadget noting it will be using the same AMR-WB wide-band speech standard currently used by T-Mobile. At the same time, it warns both callers need to have VoLTE-compatible devices and be in VoLTE-enabled areas in order for it to function.

The version of VoLTE from Verizon will also introduce video calling options, an option that will be available directly through the phone dialer instead of relying on a separate application. Users of video calling will be able to change their calls on the fly, switching between voice only and video, with Verizon stating the rollout "also sets the stage for future enhancements through Rich Communication Services (RCS)," which could introduce large file transfers, more robust group messaging, and increased location sharing options.

Does this mean on the iPhone 6 it will be able to surf web and make calls at the same time? Will the iPhone 6 need the chip to enable this? This could be really great... FINALLY!
