Patent reform debate and legislation taken off Senate's calendar

Move makes patent troll curbing measures unlikely for 2014

Comprehensive patent reform in the 2014 Senate is unlikely to happen. Citing the absence of "sufficient support behind any comprehensive deal," Senator Patrick Leahy (D-VT) has torpedoed legislation fixing the US patent system. Leahy is concerned about the long-term scope of the deal, and potential problems it may have for legitimate patent holders.

Leahy believes that any deal would lead to "burdening the companies and universities who rely on the patent system every day to protect their inventions." He does leave the door open for reintroduction, saying that if the stakeholders affected by the legislation "are able to reach a more targeted agreement that focuses on the problem of patent trolls, there will be a path for passage this year and I will bring it immediately to the Committee."

"Leahy effectively deferred a problem -- a serious problem he readily admits exists -- in order to please the pharmaceutical, biotech, and university lobbies that are hardly the victims of patent trolls anyway," said the Electronic Frontier Foundation in a statement decrying Leahy's removal of the bill.
