Saudi Arabia gives Apple clearance to operate locally

updated 04:04 pm EDT, Wed May 21, 2014

iPhone maker previously dependent on resellers

The Saudi Arabian General Investment Authority has granted Apple permission to operate directly in the country, reports say. To date Apple has had to rely on an Irish subsidiary, Apple Distribution International, and local third-party resellers. The authorization should allow Apple to open online and retail stores of its own.

The former is more likely, at first, if the company follows the same patterns it has in other countries. Apple has however begun opening outlets in previously underserved regions, such as Brazil and Turkey.
