Firmtek shipping Thundertek/PX2+2 Thunderbolt storage solution

updated 08:15 pm EDT, Tue May 20, 2014

All-in-one unit expands external storage options through single Thunderbolt port

Accessory maker Firmtek announced that it has begun shipping its newest all-in-one Thunderbolt storage system, the Thundertek/PX2+2. Certified for use with Macs and PCs, the storage unit brings together two previous products from Firmtek, the Thundertek/PX PCI-e aluminum expansion chassis, and Seritek/6G2+2 storage adapter.

The Thundertek can house two 2.5-inch drives for external storage expansion, but also includes two eSATA ports to allow direct connections to the unit or add port-multiplier enclosures. The internal drives are mounted directly to both sides of the Seritek/6G2+2 unit with screws, which then provides power and a 6G SATA connection through the card. The need for internal cabling or power adapters is eliminated, since the Seritek is an expansion card. The unit also includes the ability to hot swap, making it easier for consumers that need to access data from different drives.

"Macintosh and PC customers have wanted built-in external eSATA connections for years," says Vice President of Business Development for Firmtek Chi Kim Stanford. "Now with the release of the Thundertek/PX2+2, high performance internal 2.5-inch SATA and external eSATA connections are possible on a wide variety of Thunderbolt-equipped computers."

The unit is supported on both major computer platforms, requiring OS X versions 10.6.8 and up or Windows 8 and 8.1 on Thunderbolt enabled machines. The unit offers full RAID functionality, and backwards compatibility for most drives.

Price for the combo unit is $340, however the Thundertek/PX and Seritek/6G2+2 can also be purchased separately at $200 apiece.
