Shazam pulls Spotify integration in app for UK, could be restored

updated 07:54 am EDT, Mon May 19, 2014

Disgruntled free, paid users unhappy by Spotify removal in Shazam tests

Last week's removal of Spotify support from the iOS and Android versions of Shazam in a number of countries may be temporary. The change, which affects users in the UK, Germany, Mexico, and Brazil, stopped users from listening to recognized songs in Spotify, instead forcing them to use Deezer, in what appears to be an experiment on the app's own users.

The change in the app introduced improvements for TV show recognition, including easier access to music from shows, cast lists, and show news, as well as integration with messaging service Line. Though not noted at the time, TechCrunch reports the streaming music options were switched in the four countries, despite Spotify's overwhelming popularity in the UK when compared to Deezer.

Shazam CRO Kevin McGurn claimed in a statement the streaming music market is "getting extremely competitive," and was happy to see numerous parties interested in working with the service. "Every country is different and is its own market and its own opportunity, which is why streaming companies - as well as Shazam - need to take a country-by-country approach as we evaluate integration."

TechCrunch claims there to have been a backlash from Shazam users over the change. One user speculated on the company's support forum "What you are doing instead is not offering the by-far most popular service... and pushing another, less known service instead, so this is obviously a commercial decision."

A support page over the change to Deezer notes "We're currently trialling different streaming partners to see which are used by more of our users. Spotify integration (which we're currently working on to improve) may be returned at a later date."
