Plug-in brings Google video call functionality to Outlook, Chromeboxes

Last week, Google announced that it has released a new extension that allows Microsoft Outlook users to participate in a Google Hangout. The plug-in will allow users who don't use Google's apps for their primary communications outlet the ability to participate in video chat without the need to pay for a Google Apps for Business account.

The ability to join, schedule or start a Hangout has been added to Outlook's calendar and mail with the addition of the plug-in. There isn't any chat integration included with the extension, but users will be able to initiate contact with Outlook and Google app users alike. Installation is accomplished through an executable program file downloaded from Google. Details on the how to use the plug-in can be found at the Google support page.

The new plug-in was created in part to give businesses making use of a Chromebox an easier way to conduct video meetings. With the plug-in, video call names are added to an event in Microsoft Outlook. Users can join the video meeting from the Chromebox by entering the video call name with the remote.
