Square Register updated to include offline functionality

Square has released an update for its Square Register system today, featuring a new offline mode. Prior to now, users of the compact card reading device for iPhone and iPad required an active Internet connection; now, when one's iOS device loses its connectivity, the app continues to accept payments. Sellers are responsible for any expired or declined transactions that occur offline, and any chargebacks that may result.

Sellers are responsible for any expired or declined transactions that occur offline, and any chargebacks that may result, thus Square recommends verifying the name of the cardholder and the expiration date of the card before swiping. Offline sales must be uploaded within 72 hours to officially process the transaction, and price limits for offline card transactions can be set if desired. The Square Register app is free to download via iTunes, and requires the accompanying card reading device.

9/11 Memorial Museum app for iOS launches to accompany public opening of site

The 9/11 Memorial Museum in New York City is set to open to the public on May 21; this week, an official Memorial Museum app for iPhone and iPod touch has been made available for free on iTunes. Consisting of an audio-visual museum guide, the primary tour is narrated by actor Robert De Niro, and is comprised of 13 sections.

The Discovering History tour is geared towards children and families, and offers a separate narration. Accessibility features include language support for English, Spanish, French, and more, and in addition to voiceovers is a dedicated tour for deaf attendees, with embedded videos using American Sign Language. Tickets can be reserved online for the public viewings that begin May 21; for those not able to visit the museum in person, the 9/11 Memorial Museum app's content is suitable for standalone use.
