Apple, Motorola Mobility end suit, no patent licensing agreement

updated 08:29 pm EDT, Fri May 16, 2014

Pair of companies will try and fix the patent system together

Apple and Google's Motorola Mobility have settled the long-running patent battle between the pair. All pending litigation in all countries have been included in the deal, which does not include any cross-licensing for contentious patents. However, the two giants will "work together in some areas of patent reform."

Circuit Judge Richard Posner scuttled a pending trial two years ago, after finding damage testimonies from the both Apple and Motorola Mobile were inadmissible. The judge ruled that based on the patents at stake, neither party would win an injunction against product sales. Judge Posner recommended a deal, much like Judge Lucy Koh did in the two Apple versus Samsung trials.

Filings made earlier today by both Apple and Google with the US Court of Appeals asked for a dismissal of the case -- the appeals court had ruled at the end of April that the suit could continue, dismissing most of Judge Posner's rulings on the case.
