Xiaomi launches Mi Pad in China with Nvidia Tegra K1 processor

First Xiaomi tablet equals screen size, resolution of Retina iPad Mini

Chinese smartphone producer Xiaomi has launched its rumored first tablet. The Mi Pad shares more than a passing resemblance to the iPad mini with Retina display, with Xiaomi using a 7.9-inch display with a 2048x1536 resolution matching Apple's tablet, though the aluminum finish of the iPad mini has been replaced by brightly-colored shades of plastic similar to that of the iPhone 5C.

Weighing 360 grams (12.7 ounces) and measuring 8.5mm thick, the Mi Pad is the first device announced that will use Nvidia's Tegra K1 processor, a 4+1 processor clocked at 2.2GHz combined with a 192-core Kepler GPU. 2GB of RAM is included in the Android device, with storage options for 16GB or 64GB, with microSD expansion also available. On the back is an 8-megapixel Sony camera capable of 1080p video recording, with a 5-megapixel version on the front, with the tablet also including dual-band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, rear stereo speakers, and a 6,700mAh battery.

Xiaomi will be selling the 16GB version of the Mi Pad for 1,499 yuan ($240) through a slow "beta" release starting in June, with the 64GB priced at 1,699 yuan ($270). The company has not revealed when or if the Mi Pad will go on sale outside of China.
