Samsung issues 'deep apology' for factory-related deaths, illness

Samsung will provide compensation to affected factory workers and families

Samsung has officially apologized for the deaths and illness of workers in some of its factories. A statement from Samsung Electronics advised the company would be offering compensation to the families and employees affected by fatalities in the production facilities, as well as those suffering from illnesses possibly provoked from the working conditions.

"Several workers at our production facilities suffered from leukemia and other incurable diseases, which also lead to some deaths," said Samsung CEO Kwon Oh-hyun, according to Yonhap News. "We should have settled the issue earlier. We are deeply heartbroken that we failed to do so and express our deep apology." Bloomberg reports a third-party panel will be formed to mediate the issue and decide on fair compensation for those affected.

In March, an employee died in a factory after gas leaked from a malfunctioning fire suppression system. Two separate instances in 2013 involved hydrofluoric acid gas in the same facility, with the first killing one employee and hospitalizing four, and the second injuring three. In 2011, a Samsung-commissioned investigation found no link between workers suffering from leukemia and its processor production facilities, though a recent Bloomberg report claims multiple cases exist.
