Canon introduces two ultra wide-angle lenses, white EOS Rebel SL1

Ultra wide-angle lenses, white Rebel SL1 shipping this June

Canon is adding two new ultra wide-angle lenses to its range of glass for its DSLR cameras, as well as a new color variant of an existing model. The EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM and the EF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM are accompanied by a version of the EOS Rebel SL1 DSLR it released in March last year, but this time it will be available in white.

The EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM is said to be fully compatible with all EOS Digital SLR cameras, including full-frame models, and has a nine-blade circular aperture for soft backgrounds. The lens includes optical image stabilization that can provide shake protection for up to four shutter speed steps, while its onboard processor automatically selects the optimal IS mode, recognizing the difference between normal handheld shots and panning. Full-time manual focus adjustment is available in its autofocus mode, with a four-group zoom system offering a minimum focusing distance of 11 inches throughout the zoom range, and a maximum magnification of 0.23x.

Claimed to be a "great companion lens" for APS-C size image sensor cameras, the EF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM is said to be an affordable wide-angle lens with a stepping motor and a seven-blade circular shutter. The motor and a redesigned focus mechanism will work with the Canon EOS Movie Servo AF for continuous autofocusing during video shooting. Canon claims it to be nearly 20 percent smaller and 38 percent lighter than the similar EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM wide-angle lens, suggesting it to be more suitable for compact DSLRs. Also using a four-group zooming system, it has a maximum magnification of 0.15x.

The 16-35mm and 10-18mm lenses are set to ship in June, priced at $1,200 and $300 respectively.

The new white Canon EOS Rebel SL1 is identical to its launch state, except for its color. Weighing 14.36 ounces, it has an 18-megapixel CMOS APS-C sensor with the Digic 5 image processor, giving it an ISO range of 100-12,800, expandable to ISO 25,600. It has a shooting speed of up to four frames per second, Canon's nine-point center cross-type autofocus using its Hybrid CMOS AF II sensor, and a 3-inch touch screen LCD. The white version is shipping with a similar-colored of the EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens for $750 at the end of June.
