Yahoo acquires messaging service Blink, app to come down shortly

Deal sees Blink employees fold into Yahoo, app removed from marketplaces

Blink, a mobile app that features self-destructing messages much like Snapchat, has announced that it has been acquired by Yahoo. A statement from the company provided few details indicating that the app would be shut down in the coming weeks on both Android and iOS platforms.

The company posted on its blog that as of today they would be joining Yahoo. Sale details or employee terms of the deal were not disclosed, but the Blink team will be shifting to Yahoo for future work. The team is said to be taking a place at Yahoo's headquarters in Sunnyvale, California to work on "smart communication products" according to a statement obtained by a Yahoo spokesperson from Cnet.

"We built Blink because we believe everyone should be free to show the same honesty and spontaneity in their online conversations as they can in person," reads the post on Blink's blog. "We look forward to the possibilities that will come from bringing the Blink vision to Yahoo."

The acquisition of the Meh Labs team behind Blinks comes as Yahoo attempts to push further into the mobile marketplace. Yahoo has purchased a number of smaller web centric companies in the last two years as it looks to shift its focus from search to the future. The purchase may be considered an acquihire because of the history of one of Meh Lab's founders Kevin Stephens, who was a former Google, Boxee and Apple employee, paired with the shuttering of the app.
