Office for iPad downloads top 27 million

updated 02:46 pm EDT, Mon May 12, 2014

Stats doubled in one month, says Microsoft

Downloads of Office for iPad have exceeded 27 million, according to the general manager for Microsoft's Office division, Julia White. White made the comment today during a keynote at Microsoft's TechEd conference in Houston. The figure is more than twice the 12 million Microsoft quoted on April 3rd, just a week after the suite reached the App Store.

The numbers appear to confirm pent-up demand for Office on the iPad, which was rumored for years before its arrival. How many people are using the suite as intended, however, is uncertain. In April Microsoft said it had 4.4 million people using it with an Office 365 subscription, needed to unlock most features. That figure is presumably higher now, but even still many people may be simply using the app with existing business or personal accounts, rather than signing up for new 365 subscriptions.

Meaningless unless we have the Office 365 subscriptions numbers to compare.

27 million download is still a far cry from those who were saying no one wanted Office for iPad and that it was too late in coming. Many of these people may be simply curious but any paid sales at all is a plus for both Apple and Microsoft.

I'm one of those 27 million. Thanks to a friend who has Office 365, I was granted a 30-day free trial of it so that I could check out Word, Excel and PP on the iPad. I have to say Microsoft has done a fantastic job with it. After evaluating it, I decided that my light needs could continue to be met by Pages, Numbers and Keynote, but MS Office for iPad is a worthy competitor and they now have a cheaper, one-user personal subscription that makes it pretty reasonable.
