Samsung Galaxy S5 hits 10M shipments, gains fingerprint scanner update

updated 01:51 pm EDT, Mon May 12, 2014

Milestone shipment figure reportedly hit by Galaxy S5 within 25 days

The Samsung Galaxy S5 has been shipped over 10 million Galaxy S5 units in 25 days, according to a report. The high shipment figures for the device come as Samsung starts to release an update, improving the camera app and gallery on the flagship smartphone, as well as improving the accuracy of its fingerprint scanner, among other updates.

The figures, reported by Hankyung, claims the Galaxy S5 beat out the 27-day record held by the Galaxy S4, its predecessor, and works out to be half the time the Galaxy S3 took to reach the same milestone. The Galaxy S2 and the Galaxy S took five and seven months respectively to hit 10 million shipments. While the achievement is notable, it is worth noting that this concerns shipments to carriers and sellers alone, and not devices in the hands of consumers.

The shipment numbers do point to a positive outlook for the Galaxy S5. In the Galaxy S3's lifetime, it sold 60 million units, while the Galaxy S4 reached just 40 million. The Galaxy S5 could possibly reach or exceed the Galaxy S3, though a highly-saturated market may make this a tricky prospect to achieve.

The firmware update spotted by SamMobile has two primary changes, along with other minor issues. The camera app is faster to load than before, with a similar performance increase added to the gallery app. The fingerprint scanners accuracy is said to have been improved, though it is unclear if it will be subject to the "fake finger" attack technique reported last month. The update also improves the RAM management of the device.

The update has started to roll out to Galaxy S5 devices in the United Kingdom, via over-the-air updates and through Samsung Kies, with other editions thought to also receive it in the near future.
