Nvidia works with Valve to bring Portal and Half-Life 2 to Shield

updated 02:20 pm EDT, Mon May 12, 2014

Handheld now features two of the highest rated PC games of all time

Last month at the GPU Technology Conference, Nvidia announced that it would be working with game developer Valve to bring one of the most celebrated games in PC history to the Android-powered Shield handheld. Today, the company announced that Portal is available on the Google Play store, with an added bonus: Half-Life 2 has also been ported, and released for use with the Shield.

Nvidia says that bringing Half-Life 2 to the Shield was a "labor of love for more than a few members of the team." The company paid special attention to the graphics and control performance, so as to not lose any details in the translation from PC to Android.

"Nvidia has done a remarkable job bringing both Half-Life 2 and Portal to Shield," said Vice President of Marketing Doug Lombardi. "We're playing both games here on our Shields, and fans of both franchises can expect the same gameplay they've come to love on the PC."

Gaming on the Shield has been somewhere between the worlds of PC and mobile because of the ability to play games from the Android store, or use a GTX-powered machine to stream games to the device. However, the company says they are working hard to expand the offerings to the device, even though it supports more than 300 games.

Both Portal and Half-Life 2 are priced at $10 each on the Google Play store. Nvidia is offering the Shield for a limited-time price of $200.
