Twitter introduces mute feature to official Android, iOS apps

updated 02:55 pm EDT, Mon May 12, 2014

Feature makes its way to live apps less than a month after tests discovered

On its blog today, Twitter announced that the recently-tested mute feature is now starting to roll out to all users of the official Android and iOS apps, as well as on The feature allows users to mute someone from their timeline without unfollowing them or informing the party being muted.

The mute feature first circulated earlier this month, when selected users began running into it when looking into the options in the gear icon of followed accounts. Muting an account removes the tweets and retweets of a followed account from appearing on a Twitter timeline. It doesn't remove interactivity with the account altogether, however.

"The muted user will still be able to fave, reply to and retweet your Tweets; you just won't see any of that activity in your timeline," says product manager Paul Rosania. This also means that direct messages from the muted user will still be allowed. Replies and mentions from those users will appear in the notifications tab as well. Full information on how to mute an account is detailed on Twitter's support page.

In the announcement, Twitter states that the mute feature will be rolled out to all users in the following weeks. An update to iOS version 6.5 of the Twitter app released today enabled the feature.
