Dr. Dre video, Iovine rumors fuel talk of Beats acquisition

updated 10:28 am EDT, Fri May 9, 2014

Co-founder Jimmy Iovine could become advisor to Apple's Tim Cook

Two new reports appear to support the notion that Apple is interested in buying Beats Electronics. The New York Post says that Beats co-founder Jimmy Iovine is in talks for a "special advisor" position at Apple, making him counsel for CEO Tim Cook on "creative matters." Iovine could theoretically take the position without an Apple buyout of Beats, but an acquisition would make the position more likely.

In a video (below) posted to Facebook -- but since pulled -- Beats' core founder, Dr. Dre, is seen celebrating the alleged buyout with fellow rapper Tyrese. Tyrese captioned the video on Facebook with "How did I end up in the studio with Dr Dre ON THE night his deal went public that he did with Apple 3.2 BILLION!!!!! The BEATS HEADPHONES JUST CHANGED HIP HOP!!!!!!"

If Apple is indeed planning to buy Beats for the amount suggested, it will be the company's largest acquisition ever. It regularly buys up other companies, but usually much smaller firms that happen to have the workers or technology it wants.

I've been an Apple fan since 1987 (Mac 512K Unenhanced; several years later a SE, which I upgraded to a 20 meg HD).

If this is the direction Apple is moving, I'm going to at least start thinking about going to the Dark Side, esp. since Apple is so expensive: $1000+ for a new laptop.

This cannot be true. Nothing about this makes sense. If this turns out to be real – and I still am convinced that it isn't – then I really hope there's something about Beats that the great unwashed masses (= us) don't know about yet. Maybe patents (who knows?), maybe those streaming licences really are transferrable to a new buyer (who knows?), maybe those Beats guys really do have some great ideas. You certainly wouldn't know it by looking at their current products.

We'll all be wiser next week, I guess. Or even later today.

Headphone these day are like fashion statement. They come and go. Beats is not even worth buying it.

@coffeetime: if this thing turns out to be true, it will surely NOT be about the headphones.

Steve Jobs would have scotched the deal right there. One might hope that Cook has some of Jobs in him.

This is less about headphones, and more about streaming music, if true at all. Like I said in the other news item, we'll all see together.

All white Wall Street is breaking into a sweat every time they see Dr. Dre's photo in connect with the word Apple. Oh, noes! We absolutely must stop Apple from acquiring Beats and putting Dr. Dre on the Apple board. Black rappers are not supposed to be billionaires because it upsets Wall Street's karma. Everyone dump Apple stock to show how much we hate the Beats deal going through. Apple's only down a few dollars so I guess not enough shareholders got the message. If Dr. Dre wasn't part of Beats, the deal would have had Wall Street's blessing.
