Samsung Galaxy S5 developer edition phone now available on Verizon

updated 04:15 pm EDT, Wed May 7, 2014

Unlocked 16 GB version priced at $600, no hardware upgrades over previous models

A developer version of the Samsung Galaxy S5 has been made available from the company for use on Verizon networks. The unlocked phone, model ET-G900VMKA, is offered at an unsubsidized price of $600 direct from Samsung, and features 16GB of internal storage.

Internals for the phone are the same as the standard edition that was released last month. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 2.5 GHz processor with included Adreno 330 GPU still drives the unit. The same 16-megapixel camera exists, with no word if it will suffer from the same ROM issues early versions of the phone ran into. Health features are still included in the model, which may or may not be appealing to customers that held out an extra month for the developer version.

The only notable difference over the previous edition of the phone is that comes with the bootloader unlocked. A standard in Samsung developer editions, this allows custom firmware and easier rooting of the device. If the Samsung software suite held consumers back from purchasing the Galaxy S5, the phone offers an easier path to load custom ROMS or strip out such software, though the model is intended for developers only.

The Galaxy S5 developer edition is available now in charcoal black color. Samsung's newest Galaxy will still come with Android 4.4.2 KitKat loaded. Purchasing the phone will require users to fill out a survey asking about developer information.
