Apple discontinues iPhone 4 production for second time

updated 11:54 am EDT, Wed May 7, 2014

iPhone 4S, 8GB iPhone 5c may be filling in gaps

Apple has once again shut down production of the iPhone 4, reports say. The Times of India remarks that new supplies of the phone have ended for three leading trade partners in the country. Apple restarted iPhone 4 production earlier this year, in a bid to provide a cheaper option for regions where iPhones can be prohibitively expensive. One of the trade partners says that Apple is pulling the iPhone 4 out of all markets, something that may be backed by the disappearance of the device from Virgin Mobile USA early last month.

Another trade partner says that the 4 accomplished Apple's mission in India, doubling the country's iPhone base. In a recent quarterly earnings call, however, Apple CEO Tim Cook said that the 4 formed a "very, very low single-digit percentage" of sales, and that the 4S was actually driving revenue in poorer countries.

The 4 may be largely redundant for Apple, given not just the 4S but the addition of an 8GB iPhone 5c in some regions. The 4 is also nearly four years old, and incapable of handling more recent iPhone features like Siri or AirDrop.
