HP contributing $1 billion over two years to OpenStack

updated 09:10 am EDT, Wed May 7, 2014

Company will make its public cloud service available to 20 data centers

Hewlett Packard will grow its open source initiatives over the next two years to the tune of $1 billion. The company claims that in conjunction with the financing, it will also make its OpenStack public cloud service available over the next 18 months to 20 data centers. The project is managed by the OpenStack Foundation, a non-profit corporate entity established in September 2012 to promote OpenStack software and its community.

OpenStack has been released under the terms of the Apache License. Other companies like Intel, Oracle, Yahoo, Cisco, DEll, and IBM are also involved with the initiative.

Executive Vice President Martin Fink said of the move that "customer challenges today extend beyond the cloud. They include how to manage, control and scale applications in a hybrid environment that spans multiple technology approaches."
